X Transceivers & RF front-ends made in Europe's Microelectronics light house to Enable new 6G use cases
X-TREME 6G has an overarching objective to build a Microelectronic LightHouse (MLH) as a foundational open platform in Europe to create and design key disruptive next generation chiplets and chipsets (System on Chip, SoC) for 6G use cases by breaking-up the full potential of best-in-class Silicon BiCMOS, III-V InP and heterogeneous 3D integration for high capacity radio access technologies such as wireless back-hauling at sub-TeraHertz frequencies (>140GHz), JCAS, NTN and Network as a Sensor (NaS). X-TREME 6G journey towards building European capabilities for 6G enabling technologies can be stated as: X-TREME 6G will develop a Microelectronic LightHouse dedicated to the development of new classes of chipsets in the wireless communications to unleash the full potential of 6G and enable the emergence of new applications requiring in turn specific developments for underpinning enabling microelectronic technologies. The ambition is to enable an open platform for all the duration of the SNS programme and to nurture the links with the emerging Chips JU newly launched pilot lines including low nodes CMOS, FDSOI and heterogeneous integration. Furthermore, X-TREME 6G will provide clear and tangible contributions towards an experimentation ecosystem for 6G in Europe that will be operated as a one-stop shop demonstrating in one hand the full benefit of the newly developed chipsets and chiplets for a set of emerging 6G high potential use cases (wireless back-hauling, JCAS, NTN, NaS); and on the other hand will be open to dynamically support the emerging 6G ecosystem (SMEs, industrials, etc.) to evaluate additional 6G challenges and expectations (e.g. verticals). It is worth mentioning that all targeted microelectronic pilot lines, heterogeneous packaging capabilities and experimentation platforms within X-TREME 6G shall achieve a level of maturity of TRL5/6 allowing to demonstrate the developed technologies in a relevant environment.
Furthermore, X-TREME 6G shall validate a resource efficient 6G algorithms and software toolbox ranging from ML/AL new algorithms for base bands, which will cover the large set of planned experimental infrastructure test-beds (WBH, JCAS, NaS, NTN). Moreover, a new beam tracking and real-time weight computation for SATCOM on-the-move applications will be offered for new potential end-users.
X-TREME 6G project has received fundings from the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) under the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement NO 101192681.
